Small Business Organization: How it Works

The reason you have chosen to invest in professional organization services for your small business may be that the task seems insurmountable, that you don’t feel you have the time to do it yourself, or that you are just plain tired of all the clutter. Regardless of the reason you contact me, Lisa Whalen at Whalen Organizing & Consulting, the goal is to enable your small business or office space to function more efficiently. To this end, I endeavor to assess your needs and create and implement your customized solution with minimal interruptions to your work. Here is more about the process I use to effectively organize small businesses.

Step 1: Needs Assessment

The first part of the small business organization process is your needs assessment consultation. While this will be partially addressed during our initial phone consultation, I need to see how your space actually works…or doesn’t. I will personally visit your small business to speak with any staff members, evaluate the space and any existing processes, and suggest the supplies that will help me create your customized system.

Step 2: Get Rid of the Clutter

Between our initial meeting and the day I arrive to implement our organization plan, you will be asked to purge any unnecessary items from the workspace. For each item in question, ask yourself whether it is necessary to the function of the space. If not, find a more appropriate space for it, donate it, or throw it away. Even in a business environment, this can be a personal and time-consuming process, so be sure to allow ample time for this stage. If would like assistance with this part of the process, I will be glad to help you with it during our initial meeting.

Step 3: System Implementation

During my next visit to your small business, which will be limited to 4 hours, I will work with you and/or your staff to eliminate any clutter that has not been removed already. I will then re-organize office furniture, supplies, resources, electronics, and other items to help you make the space more efficient. If you choose, I can also organize files; either file folders or computer directories.

Step 4: Continued Service

Before leaving your small business, I will make sure that each employee understands your new customized system and how to work with it. Even the best organizational system is useless if it is not user friendly, and even the simplest system requires maintenance. I call each client within one week of the completion of our project, to make sure things are running as smoothly as they can. I also encourage all clients to call me at no charge if they ever have questions or need continued maintenance.
