Organization Is Key To Helping Your Small Business Succeed

Putting Better Processes In Place To Increase Productivity, Profitability

By Anita Edmondson

As the adage goes, “Time is money,” and Lisa Whalen, owner of Whalen Organizing & Consulting, says, “If you’re a business owner spending hours trying to figure out QuickBooks, you’re not making money. Lisa helps small businesses develop and organize systems and processes so they can operate more efficiently-and profitably.

You’re not alone

A small business owner herself, Lisa understands first-hand that entrepreneurs and small business owners often struggle with administrative and organizational tasks because they think they must be good at everything. “But they don’t. They need to focus on what they’re good at and what drives revenue.”

She cautions, “If you don’t have procedures in place or don’t know where to start with all the business forms, software and policies necessary to run a business, it’s easy to get frustrated and overwhelmed. And it’s harder to keep up with growth.”

Custom business solutions

“Organization is not cookie-cutter, Lisa explains. “I develop custom solutions and systems for business owners based on what they need and want. This includes everything from setting up accounting systems and procedures to developing human resource policies and other virtual assistant services. “People often think organizing means turning their life into chaos,” she laughs. “But I’m able to help them manage paperwork and office procedures better and faster than they can and make their life easier.”

Bringing her military and science background to bear

Lisa honed her proficiency in organization and business operations with years of experience in the United States Navy and as a biochemist in the private sector. “I worked in biotech for ten years,” she explains. “My life was saturated in processes and standard operating procedures.” In the Navy, Lisa was stationed at a small base in Maryland staffed by military personnel and civilian contractors. Working odd watches, she passed the time reading all the manuals. “People started to come to me to ask questions because I had a lot of the answers. I ended up training others.”

She said both experiences also helped her learn how to interact with different types of people at various levels. “It isn’t what level you are in the organization that matters. It’s all in how you present yourself and what you know.”

Lisa also advises entrepreneurs, “Just because you’re in business for yourself, doesn’t mean you’re supposed to do it all on your own. Let others ease the physical and emotional burdens of being a business owner. Accept the help and you will see how much more you will succeed.”
